Comic-Con 2011

Disclaimer: So, I regrettably apologize for promising many amazing and cool posts and not delivering. I've been....busy....*yea, we'll go with that excuse. And I don't want to post it all at once and then bore you, because there is too much stuff to read and on so many different topics. And don't tell me you will read it all, because you won't. You know how I know, because I wouldn't read it all. End Disclaimer.

So, let's get to Comic-Con (let me advise you that this is not the grand and might comic-con of San Diego, but the one held in Rosemont a few weeks after). So, you all might be wondering how I ended up going to a comic book convention. Well, let me tell you. [cue flashback/story sequence] I am a religious follower of the Groupon (for those who don't know, Google It!) and the daily deal was for half price Comic-Con tickets. I said to myself, 'That would be fun to go to, but I would never go by myself.' Later that day I asked a friend of mine if he wanted to go, not knowing his response and hoping he would say no so I wouldn't have to admit that I was a nerd. Well, this friend said yes and started asking all the details, and from that point on I hooked, lined and sunk.

As the days drew nearer, secretly inside I grew more excited and anxious, while on the outside I began to make lame excuses for not being able to hang out on a Saturday. When asked what I would be doing I would respond with an 'uhh...I have tickets to a thing...its like a convention, I think....I'm not really sure...' Secretly, my suppressed inner nerd was barely able to contain itself with joy and excitement.

Finally the day arrived, we got up early so we could spend the entire day at COMIC-CON!!! (we had no clue what to expect since it was first time for both of us) We were greeted to Comic-Con with a line longer than I have ever seen before, and let me tell you, after working at a water park and theme park I have seen some pretty long lines. But no worries, we were in good company with all the other 'freaks' of Comic Con. My friend and I contemplated about dressing up, however it was our first time and we didn't want to over do it. I can only begin to tell you the hundreds and hundreds of costumes, some better than others. Some from more recognizable characters, others...not so much. It did however make the line move a little faster, as we had a little entertainment included with laughs, a game of 'who are you supposed to be?' and our anxiety building up like a teenage nerd building up the courage to ask the cheer leading captain out.

Alas, we entered the doors of COMIC-CON! and who was in the lobby welcoming guest? Storm Troopers and R2D2. We could already tell it was going to be a good day. Once we obtained our wristbands, we found our way to 'the floor' or as I like to call it; the pit with a lot of smelly people and a bunch of booths placed too close together. We had no idea where to start. We had celebrities to right, merchandise to right in front of us, artist to the left and miscellaneous stuff to the back. We were like kids in the candy store. At first we just roamed around aimlessly attempting to take it all in, as if we would have to leave in 15 mins. But we didn't have 15 mins, we had ALL day. After we came to that realization we made a game plan and traversed the many aisle and booths of Comic-Con.

An Author mentioned that technically it wasn't Chicago Comic-Con because it was outside the city limits and was held in Rosemont, he then went to suggest that it was Chicagoland-Suburb Comic-Con!
R2D2 with some X-Men (we weren't sure if he was automatic or he has controlled by a remote. He just kinda wandered
Storm Troop!
Storm Trooper, Me, Tuskan Raider
Me and Valerie (Sexy Nerd Girl...that's her Youtube name and channel , I swear!)
Wheatley, (I'm assuming) GLaDOS, Me, and Chell (PORTAL 2)
Storm Trooper, Me, Aayla Secura
THE DeLorean! *psst* from the movie!
To our surprise, the 'floor' was laced with many celebrites, mostly from the Syfy Channel and other fantasy shows (Buffy, Dexter, The Living Dead) but the kicker was the handful of WWE wrestlers and Divas. What were they doing at Comic-Con? I'm not going to ask. It was kinda cool, the only downside...if you wanted a picture you had to pay. They had sign conveniently placed saying "Photo Ops: Our Camera - $50 / Your Camera - $25" I was not going to pay someone to take a picture with my camera....so I didn't. I just took drive bys. Not the best quality but hey, a celebrity is a celebrity.

We began our day at 8:30 and decided we had enough at about 3:30-4. We felt accomplished, we successfully attended our first comic-con. We felt we saw all we could see, and participated as much as we could. If we go back, which we probably will, we will definitely dress up and geek/nerd up big time in the off season. I write this post for two reasons. 1st to show the wonders your missing at events such as these and 2nd to come out of the closet as a NERD. I am a Nerd and I am pround, but I will have you know there are other people out there WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY more nerdier than I.

Nerdfully yours,

Kye
