So since the 'release' of my new single, I have had a lot of emails, texts and inquiries about what an EP is. So for this 3M, I've decided to explain the difference between an LP and an EP. Because that's what 3M's are about right? To learn something new about music. Hopefully this will open up Manic Music Mondays to a new avenue.
So lets get down to business, but first we must jump in the 'Way Back Machine'. EP and LP were used to describe the contents on a vinyl record. EP stands for Extended Play and LP stands for Long Play. EP's are typically 3-5 songs that give you an 'overview' of an artist. LP's are just a fancy name for an Album. In the vinyl record era, EP's were sent to radio stations to help promote an artist/band's LP, support their tour or to get their music out there without financing for an entire LP. It wasn't until the late 70's early 80's that EPs became publicly availble, an when they did they were usually vibrant and bright color and usually 10 inches opposed to the radio station's 7".
Now let's jump back into the 'Way Back Machine' and come back to the present. Since CD and Digital Downloads have changed the face of music, you can bet it also has changed the properties/meaning of the original EP. Today, artist and musicians create EP's as samplers, B-Sides, and they are easier to produce. They are just an easy way for an artist to record and release a few songs with out making a full length album. It allows new artist to get some feed back from his or hers followers before they finance for a full album. It also allows an artist to release songs that didn't make the album. Think of it as the 'deleted scenes' or 'bonus material' from an artist.
I hope you enjoyed this 'detoured' Manic Music Monday.
Till next week
- Kye
